City Gate Hotel launches in Exeter

I was kindly invited to the launch of the City Gate Hotel located at Exeter’s Iron Bridge on Thursday. The Youngs Brewery pub and hotel has recently undergone a refurbishment, transforming it into a modern place to either stay or simply relax with a drink.

On arrival, we were greeted by friendly staff who offered us a glass of prosecco and a tour of the newly refurbished boutique bedrooms. I have to admit, I was blown away with how gorgeous these bedrooms were. Stepping onto plush carpet, we looked around the room which was full of light, stylish decorations and ornaments, clean and well presented bedding and a shiny, spacious bathroom. My favourite thing about the room we saw was the brown feature wall behind the bed. I thought the colour scheme made it feel so warm and cosy and I would truly love to stay here – if I didn’t already live in Exeter!

All 14 bedrooms have air conditioning, crisp cotton linen, fluffy towels, an en-suite bathroom, work desk, WiFi, clock, hair dryer, iron and ironing board, safe, complimentary glass of vintage port accompanied by hand-made Devon fudge, Nespresso machine, GHD ceramic straighteners on request, a selection of teas and milk which is kept cool in the fridge. Both twin and double rooms are available and breakfast can be included. Prices start from £90 a night.

Back downstairs, the lively pub courtyard was lit up with beautiful fairy lights and was filled with plenty of places for people to sit and enjoy a natter. Talented Aspen Lourdes provided some lovely background music. Her voice is absolutely beautiful and I urge you to go and check out her website!

Patio heaters provided comforting warmth which I was pleased with. I love sitting outside in the evenings with a drink but England being England, it always ends up getting chilly so these heaters made for a nice addition. Enticing smells from the Burger Shack were wafting around the courtyard. We had the opportunity to taste a burger which was full of flavour, made of good, quality meat. Other canapés were also circling around guests. I tried a pork and apple sausage which was glazed with honey. All those flavours combined were scrummy and I would definitely order it as a main meal. To accompany, I had a crisp, ice cold Sauvignon Blanc which hit the spot, especially after a day at work!

I’d just like to thank the City Gate for inviting me to their special launch party and to all the staff who were so friendly and welcoming on the evening. The team should be proud, they’ve really created something special here and I have a feeling it will become a great success. I will definitely be visiting again for a summer drink in the courtyard.
