Review: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Harry Potter fans are currently flocking to the cinema to return to J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world. It’s been five years (yes, really *sobs*) since the last part of Harry Potter’s story graced our screens but thanks to Rowling’s spin-off book, we all get to experience the magic again!

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is now showing in cinema’s worldwide. I’ve owned the book for a few years and it never even crossed my mind that it would be made into a movie. The original book is supposed to be a copy of Harry Potter’s text book and reads like one. It’s not a novel but rather an encyclopaedia of all the mythical and wonderful creatures that can be found in the wizarding world. It also includes fun scribbles by Harry, Ron and Hermione and various inside jokes that you will be familiar with if you are a fan of the movies.

So when I heard that Fantastic Beasts was indeed being made into a film, I was so surprised but at the same time, thoroughly excited.

Starring Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler and Alison Sudol, the movie follows Newt Scamander (Redmayne) and his suitcase of magical creatures on his journey to New York where he meets down-to-earth witch Porpentina (Waterston). An accident where-by some of his creatures escape the suitcase, witnessed by friendly and open-minded No-Maj (non-magical being) Jacob leads to us following various characters as they set about returning the creatures back to the suitcase. A side-story leads to a dramatic ending with an incredible twist that will leave Harry Potter fans on the edge of their seats.

This movie has all the magic and all the charm of the Harry Potter movies without actually being part of the franchise. By setting Fantastic Beasts a few years before Harry Potter’s time, we are allowed to return to the world that we all love without continuing and potentially ruining Potter’s story. I think that all Potter fans will agree with me that we don’t want to see another Harry Potter movie – it will just ruin the series. However, it’s great to know that we can still enjoy the magic through Fantastic Beasts.

The visual effects are absolutely stunning and truly did not disappoint. A particular favourite moment of mine was when Scamander takes Jacob into his suitcase which is of course, not all that it seems from the outside. You won’t be able to take your eyes off the screen as you look around the inside of the suitcase with the characters, learning about all the different creatures and how truly fantastic they are.

The ‘Fantastic Beasts’ were brought to life perfectly. It still amazes me what CGI can do. From cute to weird, powerful to mystical, Rowling’s incredible imagination is reflected and we get to watch creatures that we have never seen anywhere else before on-screen.

The cast were almost perfect – everyone was cast to a tee and I loved how I didn’t know who some of the actors were as it added to the authenticity of the film. However, and this is my only criticism, I thought Johnny Depp’s cameo was absolutely ridiculous. For anyone who knows me, I love Johnny Depp and have always been a great fan of his work but he did not fit into this film or the character at all. I can’t say who he plays as it will just spoil it for those who have not seen it yet! I just did not imagine the character to look like how Johnny Depp does and it’s just not convincing at all. For those of you who have watched the Potter movies, I’m confident that you will be disappointed too! It just doesn’t marry up.

The movie ends with a nice cliff-hanger so I look forward to seeing what the next film brings. Rowling has recently confirmed that there will be five films in the Fantastic Beasts series which I’m thrilled about. It looks like the magic never truly dies!
